Landfill gas can be used to generate energy and reduce emissions. LFG utilization projects create partnerships among citizens, nonprofits, and industry.
Approximately one million tons of landfill waste emit approximately 432,000 cubic feet of LFG per day, enough to produce either 0.78megawatt of electricity or 216 MMBtu of heat. Roughly 70% of LFG projects generate electricity by internal combustion engines, gas turbine, and microturbines.
Garbage is deposited into a landfill area. Methane is released from the landfill waste when it decays. Once treated, the gas can be used to create electricity for a variety of purposes.
LFG projects can reduce methane emissions. Methane can be used to produce electricity or heat. A LFG energy project can capture up to 90 percent of methane.
Non-hazardous municipal solid waste, constriction and demolition waste, land clearing debris, some industrial waste, coal ash, sewage sludge, treated medical waste, solidified liquid waste and tenorm can be safely handled at the landfill.
